Vulvodinia is characterized by chronic pain, burning, or a feeling of pressure in the vulvar area, without an obvious infectious cause. The condition affects quality of life, sexual activity, and daily comfort.
How does it manifest itself?
Patients experience constant or intermittent discomfort, burning, itching, a stinging sensation, or pressure. The area may look normal on inspection, but sensitivity to touch or pressure is increased. Burning may worsen after sexual contact, use of certain hygiene products, or wearing tight clothing.
Causes and Mechanism
The exact mechanism is not fully understood, but it is thought to involve hyperreactivity of local nerve endings, minimal inflammatory changes, or imbalances in local flora. Triggering factors include repeated minor trauma, recurrent inflammation, or hypersensitivity of the vulvar mucosa.
