Dry Mouth Syndrome (Xerostomia)

Dry Mouth Syndrome (Xerostomia)

- How to recognize and manage dry mouth syndrome -

Xerostomia is characterized by reduced salivary secretion, causing dryness, discomfort, difficulty chewing and speaking, as well as an increased risk of cavities and oral infections.

How does it manifest itself?

Symptoms may include:
  • feeling of dryness
  • dry tongue
  • difficulty swallowing
  • irritation or burning in the mouth
Patients may experience a metallic taste or a lack of mucosal lubrication.

Causes and Mechanism

Causes include medication side effects, autoimmune diseases, radiotherapy, or dehydration. Reduced salivary secretion decreases the mucosa's natural protection, promoting inflammation and irritation.

Therapeutic solutions

Compounded preparations can hydrate and protect the oral mucosa:
  • geluri mucoadezive with panthenol, glycerin, or hyaluronic acid
  • soothing agents: bisabolol, dexpanthenol
  • preservative-free vehicles, adapted to the oral cavity
  • formule lichide sau gelificate for comfort and easy application
These formulations allow ingredients to be combined for optimal hydration and protection against irritation.
