Intertrigo is inflammation of the skin in fold areas in infants, promoted by moisture, friction, and heat. It can affect the neck, armpit, or groin folds.
How does it manifest itself?
The affected areas are red, inflamed, warm, and sometimes moist. Itching or discomfort with movement may occur. In complicated forms, fine scaling or pustules may be seen.
Causes and Mechanism
The mechanism involves skin maceration, repeated friction, and chemical irritants from sweat or diapers. Chronic moisture reduces skin resistance, promoting inflammation and possible superinfections.
Therapeutic solutions
